Lang Ku Ri:
According to ‘Lit-Lai-Pen-Ka-Ka’ a book dealing cosmogony of Tai Ahom, there was nothing except vacant space at the time of beginning of the universe. Amidst the vacant space there was ‘Fa-Tu-Cing-Phrong-Hum’. It is described that ‘Fa-Tu-Cing-Phrong-Hum’ had no body. Once from ‘Fa-Tu-Cing-Phrong-Hum’ ‘Khun-Theo-Kham’ came out. It also had no body. After that, both of them created this Universe gradually. From this, we can assume that ‘Khun-Theo-Kham’ is energy of creation.
Among Tai-Ahoms there is a domestic ritual called ‘Khen-Khao’ where Lang-Ku-Ri is worshipped. The verse of prayer of Lang-Ku-Ri begins like this: “Khun thou nāo Lang-Ku-Ri Po-Phi Khru me Phi ngao tang mong ba mong khru ……….” Means O Khun Thao nāo Lang-Ku-Ri ! You are the father and you are the mother of the creation... From this we can assume that Lang-Ku-Ri is also the deity of creation, that is ‘Khun-Theo-Kham’ and Lang-Ku-Ri are the same deity.
Lang-Ku-Ri is not worshiped alone. Along with Lang-Ku-Ri, Jang-Sai-Hung, La-Reng, Leng-don, Ja –Shing-Pha and Chao-Dam are also worshiped. The ritual is called Khen-Khao. It is performed for guarding all the things of a home.
Chao-Pha Shupat-Pha (Gadadhar Singha) made a temple at Che-Rai-Doi whose name was Lang-Ku-Ri, but what sort of rituals were performed there is not known. Perhaps Khen-Khao ritual was performed for the betterment of the Kingdom.
